On Friday, November 22, 2019, Putnam Avenue’s Founding Principal, Mirko Chardin, and Director of Teaching, Learning, and Coaching, Dr. Christina Farese, presented at the Boston University Wheelock Aspire Institute’s Culturally Responsive Teaching: Inviting Student Voice Forum.

Story of SelfThe half-day event included a panel discussion featuring Putnam Avenue students--Sammy Nkemnika, 8th grade; Adam Ouassaidi, 7th grade; Nariya Toledo, 8th grade; Abigail Duncan, 8th grade--and a versatile group of speakers from across the education field to discuss best practices around culturally responsive teaching and the role of student voice. Our students proudly shared their stories of self and answered questions about their experience with story of self and offered insight about building relationships with students and how to make classes more relevant and engaging.

About Story of Self
Story of Self, a framework of public narrative developed by Harvard Professor, scholar, and activist Dr. Marshall Ganz, asks individuals to consider their values and frame a story from their experience that highlights a choice, a challenge, and an outcome. Story of Self is a key part of our advisory program and is an opportunity for all of our students to demonstrate our core value of pride in their identities and to reflect on a challenge, a choice, and the outcome in their lives. Crafting and sharing this story creates an experience where staff and students can reflect, embrace the personal power of framing and telling their own story, and form deep connections within our community.

Putnam Avenue Upper School invites you to experience our school-wide event, Story of Self Day. Wednesday, December 11 from 9:30 - 11AM. Download the flyer >>
