With PARCC and MCAS testing around the corner, it is a good time to think about how we can help our students prepare for the emotional roller coaster ride that can come with testing. All students can experience some level of anxiety during testing, which is often a motivator for most. However, if the stress becomes too great, students may struggle with the fear of failure, affecting their overall performance. Here are some things for students to consider in hopes of reducing stress and anxiety while increasing overall performance:

  • Maintain a positive mindset about the test
  • Exercise the night before to prime the brain for testing
  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Eat a protein packed breakfast
  • Show up to school on time or early so that you don’t feel rushed before the test
  • Read the directions slowly and carefully
  • Stay relaxed! If you find yourself getting stressed, stop and regulate your breathing
  • Focus on each question and don’t let your mind wander
  • Take your time. There’s no reward for finishing first
