“Know your story. Own your story. Your story is your power” --Sankofa

8th GradeThe 8th graders presented to their peers a Snapshot Autobiography brochure summarizing events from their lives. Students provided a brief “About Me” section, researched and shared the origin of their name, wrote about someone in their life who is an inspiration and about an important event that helped shape them as a person.

8th GradeBy thinking about their own identity, students gain a better understanding of who they are and who they would like to become. With that knowledge, students are beginning to own their stories and can share it confidently with others. To see the surprise on students’ faces as they hear new things about their classmates, some of who they have known for three or more years confirms the importance and impact of our public narrative. The next step in the process is for students to interview someone else who remembers a defining moment they chose for their Snapshot Autobiography. This will allow the student to hear another person’s perspective and have a more complete understanding of the event. This is a lifelong process for students. As they experience more in life, they will grow and their stories will grow with them.
