8th Grade Portfolio Launch and Voicethread Celebration

8th Grade Portfolio Launch and Voicethread Celebration
Posted on 10/25/2016

On the October 19 half day, the 8th grade team invited parents to a Portfolio Launch Party. Completion of the Portfolio is a requirement for participation in graduation festivities at the end of the year. This year, we have revised the focus of the Portfolio to align it with our grade-level focus on building a growth mindset. Students will be asked to reflect on each core academic subject and one specialty or elective class and demonstrate how their work in each area demonstrates growth, as well as the Putnam Avenue Core Values. Students will also reflect on their Extracurricular activity and Community Service time. Additionally, students will complete research on a possible career path, as well as post-high school education required to achieve that career goal.

After the Portfolio Launch, parents were invited to a gallery walk of students' VoiceThread projects. These projects, which are the culminating activity for the Social Studies Identity unit, invited students to use visuals and voice to share one of two stories: a time in their lives when they let their own fears or assumptions affect a choice they made, or a time in their lives when others around them let their own fears or assumptions affect a choice they made. Students used the prompt "I wish..." to discuss what they wished had happened differently. These projects are also one of the artifacts that will be included in students' Portfolios at the end of the year.
