This month, teachers have continued to emphasize strategies for success on MCAS with our students and in our Instruction and Learning meetings. In addition to our rigorous, MCAS-aligned curriculum, what have we been doing to prepare students?

Cores Specialties
  • School-wide focus on constructed response
  • Independent Reading campaign of 20 books per student
  • Common assessments in (Math and ELA) that are administered MCAS-style
  • Using the curriculum to practice and be explicit about test-taking strategies
  • Test-Prep Thursday: Do Nows are test-prep focused
  • Exploring the test navigation and taking available practice tests
  • Making strategies visible in the classroom
  • School-wide focus on constructed response
  • Common assessments in (Math and ELA) that are administered MCAS-style
  • Visual and Performing Arts and Physical Education: Focus on anxiety tips

How can families support students during MCAS?

  • Review the MCAS tips with your child.
  • Practice stress reduction tips.
  • Talk with your child about MCAS and the importance of giving their best effort.
  • Encourage your child to leave nothing blank! There is no penalty for guessing.
  • Ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and has a good breakfast the day of the testing.
  • Remind your child how important it is to answer every part of a question and to explain their thinking.
